‘Remarkable, ghostly music’ The Guardian

Josephine Foster is a musician and artist from Colorado. She is known to breathe new life into archaic forms, embodying the cultural archaeology of Harry Smith’s old weird America and has lent her enigmatic voice and interpretive wit to nearly two decades of recordings. She is active since 2000, releasing 18 albums – the last one, No Harm Done (Fire Records; on her website – listen below).
The voice becomes the main instrument. Her distinctive vocals accommodate a vast range of styles and subjects, from the spiritual to the psychedelic realms or inspired by poetry or Spanish folk songs, she’s a unique, refreshingly underground and cutting edge. On 27th August 2020, Josephine Foster has…

LUCINDA WILLIAMS – Good Souls Better Angels

Intonations Cocktail Club 432

lucinda-williams-Good-Souls-Better-Angels

Cosmic Dancer

I was dancing when I was twelve
I was dancing when I was twelve
I was dancing when I was out
I was dancing when I was out

I danced myself right out the womb
I danced myself right out the womb
Is it strange to dance so soon?
I danced myself right out the womb

I was dancing when I was eight
I was dancing when I was eight
Is it strange to dance so late?
Is it strange to dance so late?

I danced myself into the tomb
I danced myself into the tomb
Is it strange to dance so soon?
I danced myself into the tomb

Is it wrong to understand
The fear that dwells inside a man?
What’s it like to be alone
I liken it to a balloon

I danced myself out of the womb
I danced myself out of the womb
Is it strange to dance so soon?
I danced myself into the tomb

ALGIERS – There Is No Year

Intonations Cocktail Club 432

algiers-there-is-no-year

Waterloo Sunset

Dirty old river, must you keep rolling, rolling into the night
People so busy, make me feel dizzy, taxi light shines so bright
But I don’t, need no friends
As long as I gaze on Waterloo Sunset, I am in paradise
Every day I look at the world from my window
Chilly chilly is the evening time, Waterloo sunset’s fine
Terry meets Julie, Waterloo Station, every Friday night
But I am so lazy, don’t want to wander, I stay at home at night
But I don’t, feel afraid
As long as I gaze on Waterloo Sunset, I am in paradise
Every day I look at the world from my window
Chilly chilly is the evening time, Waterloo sunset’s fine
Millions of people swarming like flies ‘round Waterloo underground
Terry and Julie cross over the river where they feel safe and sound
And they don’t, need no friends
As long as they gaze on Waterloo Sunset, they are in paradise

True Love Will Find You in the end

True love will find you in the end
You’ll find out just who was your friend
Don’t be sad, I know you will
But don’t give up until
True love will find you in the end
This is a promise with a catch
Only if you’re looking will it find you
‘Cause true love is searching too
But how can it recognize you?
Unless you step out into the light
Don’t be sad, I know you will
Don’t give up until
True love finds you in the end
True love will find you in the end
You’ll find out just who was your friend
So don’t be sad, I know you will

Redemption Song

Oggi mi sento questa canzone

Old pirates, yes, they rob I
Sold I to the merchant ships
Minutes after they took I
From the bottomless pit
But my hand was made strong
By the hand of the Almighty
We forward in this generation
Triumphantly
Won’t you help to sing
These songs of freedom?
‘Cause all I ever have
Redemption songs
Redemption songs
Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery
None but ourselves can free our minds
Have no fear for atomic energy
‘Cause none of them can stop the time
How long shall they kill our prophets
While we stand aside and look? Ooh
Some say it’s just a part of it
We’ve got to fulfill the Book
Won’t you help to sing
These songs of freedom?
‘Cause all I ever have
Redemption songs
Redemption songs
Redemption songs
Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery
None but ourselves can free our minds
Wo! Have no fear for atomic energy
‘Cause none of them-a can-a stop-a the time
How long shall they kill our prophets
While we stand aside and look?
Yes, some say it’s just a part of it
We’ve got to fulfill the book
Won’t you have to sing
These songs of freedom?
‘Cause all I ever had
Redemption songs
All I ever had
Redemption songs
These songs of freedom
Songs of freedom

Chasin’ Wild Horses

Auguri vecchio mio.

Guess it was somethin’ I shouldn’t have done
Guess I regret it now
Ever since I was a kid
Tryin’ to keep my temper down is like
Chasin’ wild horses, chasin’ wild horses
Chasin’ wild horses
Left my home, left my friends
I didn’t say goodbye
I contract out to the BLM
Up on the Montana line
Chasin’ wild horses, chasin’ wild horses
We’re out before sunup
In after sundown
There’s two men in the chopper
Two under saddle on the ground
In the evenings we’d hop in the pickup
Head into town for a drink
I make sure I work ‘til I’m so damn tired
Way too tired to think
You lose track of time
It’s all just storms blowin’ through
You come rollin’ ‘cross my mind
Your hair flashin’ in the blue
Like wild horses, just like wild horses
Just like wild horses
A fingernail moon in a twilight sky
I’m ridin’ in the high grass of the switchback
I shout your name into the canyon
The echo throws it back
The winter snow whites out the plains
‘Til it can turn you blind
The only thing up here I’ve found
Is tryin’ to get you off my mind
Is like chasin’ wild horses, chasin’ wild horses
Chasin’ wild horses, chasin’ wild horses
